Hello to all my Eigo Sogo students,
How are you? Today I will show you here your new Assignment 2 - researching about endangered (絶滅危惧種) or extinct (絶滅種) animals.
Below is a video about an animal that may be extinct now, but that a few members were still found alive in the 1930s in Tasmania, the island off the southeastern coast of Australia - the thylacine, sometimes called the Tasmanian tiger.
It was not a tiger at all - it looked like a dog. But it was also not a dog - it was a marsupial (有袋動物), related to the kangaroo. Like kangaroos, it carried its babies in pouches under its stomach. The last known thylacine died in 1936, and this video shows a short film clip of it.
There are some people who believe that it may still be alive now, and in Tasmania, there are people who have reported seeing some examples of thylacines in the wild - but scientists have no proof.
ASSIGNMENT 2
So here is your assignment: find an example of an animal - any kind is okay - that is endangered or even extinct in Japan, or another country of your choosing. Find 1-2 pictures of it - and write some notes about it. Here's what you should write:
Name of animal
Where it lived (for example, in the case of Japan - throughout Japan, or an area - the Tohoku, Kyushu, Okinawa, etc.)
Diet (what kind of food it ate)
Features of the animal (how big or small was it? What color(s) was it?)
Relationship to humans (was it dangerous to people? Was it ever made into a pet?)
Year or decade it was known to become extinct (and if it is not extinct, how endangered is it? About how many of them are still alive?)
Anything unique about the animal (any unusual points about it - living space, relationships with other animals, etc.)
Next week (11/27), we will present what we found to each other in group mini-presentations.
See you then!
