How are you? How was your holiday? I hope it was a good one for all of you!

Here's a post about entertainment (娯楽), places (場所) and events (イベント)! 

What kinds of places or events would you like to go and see? Look at these places and events. Which ones do you like? Which ones are interesting? Which ones do you like? Which one do you like the best? Which one is the most interesting? Talk (and write) about these places and events! 

例えば：
A: What do you want to do - go to a live concert or an open air market? 
B: Hmm...a live concert. 
A: A live concert? How come? 
B: Because I love live music. How about you? 
A: Well, it's okay, but I think an open air market is more interesting to go to.

Now try this - look at these pictures. Mix and match them and talk about places and events you would like to go to!

How are you? Here are some great student posters on global-glocal themes. These are ideas you can research about for your presentations. We will do these in class before our Christmas and New Year's holidays!

Speaking I (D)

For your presentations, you can research with partners on one of three themes:

• immigrant communities in different countries and some problems they have 
• refugees (難民) coming to Japan and difficulties they have
• educational systems in different countries 

I decided to add two more themes - about refugees and educational systems - to our presentation topic ideas to give you more ideas to choose from. Here are some examples of past student posters on these themes:

Speaking II (A) 

For your presentations you can research with your partners on different indigenous or ethnic groups, communities, and languages around the world. The blogpost you saw about the Ainu was one example of this kind of community.

Here are some other indigenous peoples, communities, and languages you could choose from for your research. Because you are European and American Culture majors (Obei), I have made a list of unique peoples, communities, and languages from Europe and North America:

The Travelers (Ireland)
Bretons (northern France)
Welsh language (Wales, the UK)
The Basques and their language (northwestern Spain/southwestern France)
The Sorbs and their language (eastern Germany/southwestern Poland)
German minorities of Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan
Hungarian minority of Romania
The Sami people (northern Norway and Finland)
Metis people of Quebec (Canada)
The Haida (British Columbia, Canada)
Hasidic Jews of New York (U.S)
The Lumbees (east central cost of the U.S.)
Cherokee language (Oklahoma, the U.S.)
Cajun (Acadian) people of Louisiana (the U.S.)

Or - if you can think of another unique minority community or language in Europe or North America, you can choose that too.

ECA (Speaking) I (J): エスニシティー・正体

How are you? Today, let's look more at our global-glocal topic about ethnicity and identity (エスニシティー、正体).

Homework
Here are two videos on the topic of ethnicity and identity. Both videos are about the newest Miss World Japan for 2016, Priyanka Yoshikawa. You may have heard of her - she is half-Japanese and half-Bangladeshi, and she has had some very different reactions by Japanese people to her winning the Miss World Japan contest.

Here is the first video. It's short and in Japanese, and gives you an idea of who she is.

Here is the second one. It's longer, and it comes from an Internet-based website for a Japanese person who teaches Japanese to foreigners online. It starts off in English - but then goes into Japanese. The teacher interviews people on the street in Tokyo to get their reactions to her being Miss World Japan. 

Here are some questions for you to answer. Watch the video more than once if you have to. Please write your answers in your notebook. 

Here are the first set of questions.

What does she think of mixed people? 

How does she feel about Priyanka Yoshikawa representing Japan?

2. The second woman:

What does she think of Priyanka Yoshikawa being Miss World Japan?

3. The man and woman:

4. The two female friends:

What does the first woman say about Priyanka Yoshikawa's ethnic background? 

How does the second woman feel about the judges' choice of Priyanka Yoshikawa?

What does the first man say about her looks?

How does the second man feel about her representing Japan (日本の代表している) ?

How are you? Our new topic is on immigrants (移民) - people from one country who move to live in another country, and identity (正体) - your feeling and understanding about who you are as a person.

Look at the pictures below. They are the directions to Seigakuin from Miyahara station, but the pictures are not in the right order (違う道順). With a group or a partner, can you put these pictures in the right order? 

When you are finished, can you talk about these directions? Here is some language you can use for the order (順番) of the directions:

How are you? Today, I'd like to show you a short video of a Japanese tourist at a flea market in Sydney, Australia. 

Activity
1. Watch the video with no sound. How many things can you see in the video? Can you name them? Write down in your notebooks all the things in the flea market you see.

2. Watch it again with the sound on. Does the tourist talk about any things you don't see in the video? What does he say? Write them down. 

3. Which things at this flea market would you buy? Talk about these things!

How are you! Today let's think about prices (物価) from the past (過去) - how well do they match up to prices now - in the present (現在)? 

Activity

Look at the poster at the top. It's an old Meiji poster from the 1960s. It's from a long time ago, isn't it? How much money do you think these cost back at that time?

Now look at some old pictures of things we still enjoy or use now. With a partner or in a group, can you guess if these things were cheaper, the same, or more expensive in the past?

(Remember! Cheap = 安い/The same = 同じ/Expensive = 高い)

例えば ：

Bon Curry has been enjoyed in Japan for a long time - since 1968! This is an old Bon Curry package. In 1968, do you think a package of Bon Curry was cheaper, the same, or more expensive, than now?

Answer (答え): It was cheaper.
