電気通信大学 AWE I: Writing assignment 1 (The Small Book of Big People)・作文1

Hello!

How are you?
Today, I'll tell you about our 1st writing assignment (作文1). While I gave all of you the handout about the assignment, I will post about it on here as another way to remind you, with a little extra information.

Topic

Write about a unique, interesting, or special personYou can write a one-sided argument about a unique or interesting person of your choice. Research and write about anyone - a scientist, for example; or even someone who is not from science, such as a singer, musician, actor, athlete, writer or artist.

I will gather your writing on this topic into a book of student writing about people called The Small Book of Big People. I started this a few years ago with students I had at another university.

So here's some extra information: Check their writing out at this link, and at this link too. These are student writings on other kinds of topics, but they are good examples of the kinds of things students can do. I hope they can give you some confidence that you too can write as well as they can. I believe you can!

How much to write

How much do you write? I would like you to write as much as you can, because your work may be published (出版した) on both this blog and in The Small Book of Big People book.

I would like to see all of you go for at least 2-3 paragraphs' worth of writing – even more is better, if you can try for it.

Deadline (締め切り)
Our deadline is May 26th (5/26), so you have two weeks. I want you to bring in a first draft (下書き) next week (5/19) in your notebooks in pencil. I will then review your work, then you can write to the finish and turn in your work.

Good luck with this! I hope you can have fun with this, and enjoy writing about a person or a place.

東京理科大学 B英1: Most populous places・人口が多く場所

Hello!

How are you? Today let's look at the most populous places on Earth - places with the most people in the world.

The picture above is of Delhi, India. It has a population (人口) of 26,454,000 as of 2016. That's incredible!

What might be more incredible is that Tokyo has even more people than Delhi. But there are many cities in the world with big populations.

Here's another one - Sao Paulo, Brazil:

Here's another - Lagos, Nigeria:

Activity/homework
Now here's a question for all of you: What kinds of problems do you imagine happen in such crowded cities? Think about a lot of things - transportation, housing, food, education, and so on.

Talk about these things with your classmates.

See you next time!

電気通信大学 AWE I: Identities・正体

Hello!

How are you? Today, let's look at some pictures of famous people, and think of some ideas about their identities (正体). Do you know who they are?

The picture at the top is Nikola Tesla. I'm sure all of you know who he is - he was an inventor and engineer, originally from Serbia, who became famous in the U.S. What other things do you know about him?

Activity/homework
Now how about these people? Do you know who they are? If you do - what do you know about them?

Talk with your classmates about these people. Who are they? What do they do? What do you - or your classmates - know about them? Then write some notes about what you know of them - or what you guess about their characters, or your impression of them.

See you next time!

Here's an example of a Power Point show. The screenshot at the top of this post is the first slide of this show.

The information in the slides are things that I believe make for good Power Point design tips. They are not the only things you can do - but they are safe things you can do if you want to use Power Point but would like some guidance. Look at these and I hope they can help you! Read the slides - they are good tips.

Light gray, light blue, light green or even light pink backgrounds are easier on the eyes to see on big screens.

If you want have pictures with text, however, here are some tips:

This is also important! Humor is okay in Power Point presentation - but only when it fits the topic.

The writing on this slide might be a little small - but basically, it's okay to have more than one picture on a slide. But make sure the design is clear and organized for people to follow and understand.

Very important! Always have a conclusion (まとめslide!

I hope these tips can help you.

Good luck!
