ECA (Culture) B:

Hello!
How are you? Here is the support post I have told all of you about. I'm very sorry to post this late!

Here are your themes:

Nozomu - food culture (飲食の文化)
Naoki - gender issues (性別の問題)
Tomoyuki - weddings and marriage
Yayoi & Aoi - society, gender and culture
Ayumi - culture (文化)

Here are some ideas to think about for your topics:

Nozomu - think about two or three different food cultures around the world (outside of Japan). Why do people in these cultures eat the food they do? Why do they have the eating manners they do? (For example, why do people in some cultures eat with their hands, which some use chopsticks and others knives and forks?)

Here is a Wikipedia link to help you get started.

Naoki - gender issues (性別の問題) is a big area. Where do you want to focus on? In jobs, or education, or maybe in science or entertainment? Also what country? Japan, or another country?

Here are some ideas for you if you want to focus on women in Japanese society:
  • Problems women have in Japanese society
  • Successful women in Japanese society (such as in science, business, or education - you can also research on difficulties Japanese women have in these areas)
  • Pioneering women in Japanese history (for example, Murasaki Shikibu, Saigou-no-Tsubone, Higuchi Chiyo, Haraguchi Tsuruko, Tsuda Umeko, etc.)

Yayoi & Aoi - society, gender and culture (社会、性別、文化) is also a big area. Here are some questions for you to think about:

How many women work in Japan compared to women in some other countries? (そのことは海外と日本の女性達が働いてことの比較する) What kinds of jobs do Japanese women often have? How about women in other countries? What problems do they have in the workplace? (勤務場所、職場に問題があるの) Also - what are the cultural expectations of women in Japan versus, for example, the U.S., China, or some other countries?

Ayumi - your topic is culture. That's a really big area! You have to focus the topic. Japanese culture? American culture? Here's one idea:

Cultural differences in the same country. For example, for Japan, the Kansai and Okinawa, Chugoku and the Tohoku - maybe some differences in the same festivals, or same food in different areas (for example, Chugoku soba is different from soba in the Kanto).

In the U.S., the big eastern cities (such as New York, Boston, or Philadelphia) are very different from the southern states like Tennessee, Mississippi, or Georgia. There are different accents, different food dishes, some different celebrations, and even some different customs in the same holidays.

In the U.K., there are big differences between northern and southern England - also some different accents, different food, and so on. Scotland and Wales also - different in many ways from England.

I hope these ideas can help all of you!

How are you? Today I'd like to show you the final presentation project Here is what you will do.

You will see five (5) videos here, for five different songs. Choose one song and present about the song and the artist. Find out as much as you can about the artist and the song. Try to find the Japanese words to the songs for the meanings.

Here are the songs:

ECA (Travel English):

Hello!

How are you? Here is a special post for all of you - some points about your final presentations Here are some rules and points:

Presenting with a partner or presenting alone
You can present with one (1) partner - or present alone. But I have to know next week (1/21) which way you are presenting

You can select any partner you want if you want a partner - but remember, only two (2) partners at most!

Topics
You can present on any topic we have learned about this semester. Here is what we did:

1. Customs & immigration, requests, rules & permission (入国出国手続き依頼と許可)
2. Shopping, food, restaurants & tipping, information (ショッピング・食べ物レストランとチップ情報)
3. Global & glocal issues in travel
4. Entertainment, events, festivals  (娯楽、イベント、祭り)

SPECIAL NOTE
Please remember that we did our mid-term presentations (中間プレゼンテーション) about food from other cultures and countries - so please do not do a presentation about food! (But presenting about restaurants or eating styles in other countries and cultures are okay!)

Displays
You can make posters or a Power Point. My advice is to have 5-6 pictures for a poster - or 7-8 pictures for a Power Point show

Remember to put your Power Point show on a USB hard drive!

Information to put on your poster or Power Point
Here's what you should have in your presentation:

1. Pictures of things that connect to your topic

2. Written information about facts or points about your topic

Here's an example of a poster layout for one of these topics:

Schedule for our last classes
1/14 - final presentation introduction

1/21 - open class time for presentation work, checking by me with advice, comments, or any help you need - plus presentation practice if you can (I strongly recommend that you practice your presentations!)

1/28 -  final presentations

I hope this helps you. Let's get to work - but let's also have fun with these displays!

See you next week!

Hello!

How are you? Let's talk about directions (方向)!

Activity
Look at these pictures. They are the directions from Miyahara station to Seigakuin, but the pictures are not in the right order With a group or a partner, can you put these pictures in the right order?

When you are finished, can you talk about these directions? Here is some language you can use for the order (順番) of the directions:

First...    go straight...    down this street...    turn right...    turn left...

next to the...    between (the)...    across from (the)...    at (the corner)...

on the left...    on the right...

Try it! This is the first picture

(ECA) Speaking I (J & D): グロバル・グロバルのポスター (Part 1)

Happy New Year to you all!

How are you in this New Year? I'm doing great, and I hope you are too. Today I'd like to show you all the pictures I took of your presentations from December on global-glocal topics.

I'm very proud of the work you did on these, and I show these posters here so that you can see them too, and feel proud of what you did!

Look at the one at the top. It's great! Now here are some more:

Aren't they great? Now look at this one about foreign educational systems, which comes in different parts with pictures about some different countries:

Great!

This is not all - I'll show some more in a Part 2 post.

See you then!
