Hello!

How are you? As I mentioned in class today, here are some review questions for all of you for next week's (1/28) board game review test

NEW - I wrote here for yesterday that the review test will be worth a maximum of 50 points. I'm very sorry to make a mistake here - the review test will be worth 40 points - not 50!

So here are some review questions for Units 910, 11, & 12

Review questions
Unit 9

What could be one (1) example of what a sports psychologist does for a sports team?
What do clinical psychologists specialize in?
Name two (1) ways in which exercise can help our mental health.

Unit 10
What is barter?
Name one (1) problem with barter.
Around when did the concept of money first develop?
Name one (1) place where money first developed.
What language does the English word "salary" come from?
What does the word "salary" mean in that language?
Why did that word have that meaning?
According to the textbook, what could be one (1) idea about the future of money?

Unit 11
Where did the Tenerife disaster happen?
When did the disaster happen?
Which two airlines' planes were involved in the accident?
What was the weather like on the day of the accident?
What are fatalities?
How many people were killed in the accident?
Which language is standard in use for radio communications in airports?
What expression do air traffic controllers use to ask pilots to wait?

Unit 12

What does it mean to breathe
What is the chemical equation for carbon dioxide?
Around how many people can one tree produce enough carbon dioxide for?
What is the chemical formula for photosynthesis?
What are purposes of plant sugars?
What are the three (3) functions of photosynthesis?
What is algae?
Where is the sunlit zone?

So good luck on your review! As I also mentioned in class, I recommend that you get together with the partner you selected and review with him or her this week outside of class. That way, you can help prep each other for the test.

See you at your time with your partner next week!

東京理科大学 A英1: Final review game board exam instructions review・期末テスト「ボードゲーム」の説明レビュー

Happy New Year!

How are you? I hope you had a great New Year's break

Today I will post here a review of the instructions (説明) about our final review exam. As I've said in class, it will be in the form of a board game. We will play this on our final class meeting on January 28th (1/28).

It's the same board game you played in the review exam in July - but now with some different questions from the textbook!

I hope once again that this is an interesting way to take a test for all of you!

Instructions
First - like before, this is what the board will look like. It will be on A3-sized paper:

You will notice 14 playing squares - seven (7) black squares, and seven (7) white squares, with the start square and the goal in grayThis board will be for the two (2) game pieces that two (2) players will play on

The 14 squares will be for the questions that both players will ask each other. The arrows show the directions the players will move their game pieces around on when they answer the questions correctly.

Now let's review the steps in the board game!

Here is what the score sheet looks like (It's small on the scan shot, but you'll see it more clearly on paper next week!)

As before, you will see that there are spaces for three (3) "makeup" (補講) questions

As you play with your partner, if your partner's score is not so high after the seven (7) questions, you will see four (4) extra questions. You can choose up to three (3) of these "makeup" questions to ask your partner

Special note: Only do these extra three (3) questions if your partner hasn't been doing well. If your partner has been scoring well - you don't need to ask these questions!

This can give your partner some more chances to raise up a higher score on the test.

I hope this is okay for all of you! Take a look at these steps - look at them as many times as you want or need. We'll play this next week (1/28) in our last class for the review exam!

So good luck! See you next week!

東京理科大学 A英1: Parapsychology・超心理学

Hello!

How are you? Here is a post for our new topic on sports psychology.

Do you know what these cards are at the top? They are called Zener cards, and they were first used for experiments in parapsychology (超心理学) in the U.S. in the 1930s.

A researcher in parapsychology named Joseph Banks Rhine made this experiment famous. He worked with an assistant named Karl Zener, who designed the cards. They wanted to prove the existence of ESP (extrasensory perception).

Experiments such as these have sometimes been used in sports psychology as ways to help athletes, such as baseball or soccer players, get over any difficulties they may have with their play or physical conditioning.

The experiments with these cards, however, were found over the years to have problems, and very few people in psychology now take this experiment seriously.

As future applied scientists, you should know that this is of course not scientifically valid. I do not put this here to make it look valid, or to make you believe in this. But it may be interesting to see how it works, and to play this as a game. Let's check it out!

Activity

Watch this video, but do not make any notes! You will need pencil and paper, however, to record your scores!

You can test you on how much you remember the order of the Zener cards with this video. You can even test a partner in the same way.

For the first 1:10 of the video a person introduces what Zener cards are. You can skip this part and go directly to the cards! From that point, there's no talk on the video. It's silent, so it should be no problem to follow it. Let's get started!

How well did you do?

See you next time!

東京理科大学 A英1: 3rd presentation topic・プレゼンテーション3

Hello!

How are you? Here are the topics and guidelines for our third (3rd) presentation projects for this year.

This is our third presentation cycle because of my mistake in overlooking our second presentations from the second quarter in the spring. That is my fault! I am very sorry about that.

While I have given all of you the handout about the assignment, I am posting it here as well to help remind all of you about what you can do for it.

Topics
Choose one (1) of these topics
  • Key inventions or discoveries in science and engineering from the Industrial Revolution
  • Problems and solutions of learning a foreign language or an interesting point about a foreign educational system
Deadline (締め切り)
Your presentation day will be on November 19th (11/19), so you have three (3) weeks to prepare them. Please be ready on the day to present.

Guidelines
1. Write a summary (要約) with your partners about the topic you want to present on. The summary will be due next week (来週).

*Go to this link for a review of what should go into a summary. The link is a post about summaries and outlines - for now, only look at the part about summaries! I hope this can help you in your summary writing.

2. With your classmates, fill in the topic preparation sheet that comes with this handout. There is a section on it to write in the summary. This is a working record of your group’s preparation about your topic.

3. Be ready for me to review your progress next week and for your group to practice your presentation in-class on November 12th (11/12). You can practice with me and/or other groups of students.

4. Finalize your presentation outside of class and be ready to present on 11/19!

Good luck! I look forward to our presentation day!

See you next time!

電気通信大学 ASE II・東京理科大学 A英1: Foreign educational systems・外国教育

Hello!

How are you? Let's keep going more with the theme of education

Look at the picture above. It's of a classroom in Tanzania, in Africa. Today
I have three short videos for you about educational systems in three different countriesFinlandIndia, and South Korea

Let's watch one of the videos in classyou can choose which oneLet's answer these first two questions after we watch:

1. Do you see anything from your own educational experiences in the video of the country's system you watched?

2. Overall, does it seem better - or worse - than your educational experience?

Here are the videos. The first one is about education in Finland

This next one below is about India.

This last one is about South Korea.

Homework
Watch the other two videos we did not see in class and make some notes about your impressions. Now answer these next two questions in your notebooks:

3. Which of the three systems is the least like your experience?

4. If you could bring together some things from these countries into a single educational system, which parts would you take from each country?

Post your impressions as comments to this blogpost. I'll be interested to read what you have to say and will value it greatly.

See you next week!

電気通信大学 ASE II・東京理科大学 A英1: Math education in India・インドの数学教育

Hello!

How are you? The picture at the top is a hexadecimal multiplication table. It is one of many ways that multiplication (九九) is taught in schools in a number of countries.

Activity/homework

Look at the video below. It's an elementary school math teacher in India showing patterns that children follow there to learn multiplication tables. It's in Hindi (ヒンデュ語), but you can follow the patterns if you look carefully.

While as applied science and technology majors you may know and/or understand these patterns already, how would you compare the teacher's method with how you learned multiplication tables in school?

(If you have any trouble seeing this video clip, go to this link here, or look on YouTube for "How math is taught in India," or paste in this URL: https://youtu.be/EIYPGfcCab0)

What do you think of this method?

Have fun talking about this!

See you next class!
