東京理科大学 情報学科技術英語: Review of outline writing・あらすじ書いてのレビュー

Hello!

How are you? Here are some extra notes for all of you about writing outlines

While I had said I would upload this post from Thursday night, I have decided to upload it earlier, as it is important. If you see this sooner, then I hope this can help you get on your outlining for your presentation sooner!

Review
First, what is an outlineAn outline is like a guide or set of steps to what will be in a presentation or written composition (作文).

Because of this, the language in an outline should be short - no complete sentences and only keywords and key phrases. It should be as concise (簡明) as possible.

Outlines are divided into an introduction, with main ideassupporting points, and supporting details

Let's look at an example of an outline for a presentation comparing Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla and their research with electricity.

Parts to an outline

Introduction
The introduction shows the key to what the paper is about. It has a Roman numeral (ローマ数字) - always, Roman numeral I

例えば:

I. The research of Edison and Tesla with electricity

Note: Write this in regular type - do not put in italics or in bold. Also, do not put a period (.) after - this is a guide point, not a full sentence.

Main ideas - first main idea

The first main idea should show the first thing you will treat in your topic. It will have a Roman numeral II.

例えば:

II. Edison

Note: It should be as short as possible - even a key word. Do not put in italics or in bold. Also here, do not put a period (.) after

Main ideas - second main idea

The second main idea should show the next thing you will treat in your topic. It will have a Roman numeral III.

例えば:

III. Tesla

Note: It should be as short as possible - even a key word. Do not put in italics or in bold. Also here, do not put a period (.) after

Supporting points

Your supporting points go with the main ideas, and they break down the main points. They will have capital letters with periods after (A., B., C., etc), and when typed, be indented around five (5) spaces

Let's look at an example of subheadings with the first main point about Edison:

例えば:

II. Edison
     A. Experiments with electricity
     B. Direct current (DC) research

Note: The supporting points should also be as short as possible - even key words are okay. Do not put in italics or in bold. Also here, do not put a period (.) after

Details

Details show, in a short way, some focused pieces of information about the main points

They have Arabic numerals (算用数字、アラビア数字), and are also indented five (5) spaces from the supporting points.

例えば:

II. Edison
     A. Experiments with electricity
     B. Direct current (DC) research
          1. Carbon filament
          2. Electric lamp

Note: The details should also be as short as possible - key words are okay. Do not put in italics or in bold. Also here, do not put a period (.) after.

Not every supporting point needs to have details, but if they are important enough to be further broken down, then you should put in some details.

Conclusion

The conclusion is a summarized sentence, or even phrase, that shows the final point of your topic. It will have whatever the last Roman numeral is in your outline.

In the example of the Edison and Tesla presentation topic, this one has the Roman numeral V

例えば:

V. Overall impact of Edison over Tesla

Note: Like the introduction, main ideas, supporting points and details, the conclusion should also be as short as possible. Also - do not put in italics or in bold, do not put a period (.) after.

Completed outline

Look at this example of a completed outline, with a title, labeled to show you what each part of the outline means. This is to show you what you should try for in your outline writing

While this example is a little small, you can expand it on your screen. Because this is a screenshot, you can also print this out:

Now here is the same outlinewithout the labels. This is how it should look when you hand it in. As this also is a screenshot, you can also print this out too:

So this is what the final versions of your outlines should look like - keywords and key phrases only!

I hope these notes can help you with your outline writing. Good luck!

電気通信大学 ASE II: Presentation topic 3・プレゼンテーション 3

Hello!

How are you? Our 3rd presentation topic, and first for the fall semester, will be about comparing and contrasting similarities and differences in educational systems between Japan and another country.

Topic
Choose any country to compare and contrast with Japan to make a two-sided argument about the advantages and disadvantages of education between Japan and another country, with an encouraged focus on science education.

While I showed you the videos on the blogpost about education in Finland, India, and South Korea, you should find other videos and/or readings on educational systems in other countries for your comparison and contrast.

You can choose any level of education as your point of comparison and contrast –elementary, junior high school, high school, or university. (Please remember to compare and contrast the same levels of education – for example, advantages or disadvantages of elementary school in Japan with advantages or disadvantages of elementary school in Germany, or advantages or disadvantages of high school in Japan with advantages or disadvantages of high school in Russia, and so on).

I encourage you to focus on science education, though you can focus on other areas of education if you wish. A focus on science education, however, may be more interesting for you. How does the quality of science education in Japan compare with the quality of science education in another country? What would arguments for the strength of science education in Japan be versus any strengths of science education in another country? Where would Japan be strong – and not so strong – in different areas of science education?

Deadline (締め切り)
We will do these on November 13th (11/13), so you have two (2) weeks to prepare these. Aim to make a presentation of around 4-5 minutes, including a Q&A from others you will present to.

Guidelines
1. Prepare a summary (要約) about what you will present on. The summary will be due next week on November 6th (11/6).

*I would like you to refresh yourselves on what a good summary should include.
Go to this link from earlier this year for a review of what should go into a summary.

The link is a post about summaries and outlines - for now, only look at the part about summaries! I hope this can help you in your summary writing.

2. Be ready for me to review your progress next week (11/6) and for you to practice your presentation in-class. You can practice with me and/or other students.

3. Finalize your presentation outside of class and be ready to present on 11/13!

Good luck! See you next class!

東京理科大学 A英1: 3rd presentation topic・プレゼンテーション3

Hello!

How are you? Here are the topics and guidelines for our third (3rd) presentation projects for this year.

This is our third presentation cycle because of my mistake in overlooking our second presentations from the second quarter in the spring. That is my fault! I am very sorry about that.

While I have given all of you the handout about the assignment, I am posting it here as well to help remind all of you about what you can do for it.

Topics
Choose one (1) of these topics
  • Key inventions or discoveries in science and engineering from the Industrial Revolution
  • Problems and solutions of learning a foreign language or an interesting point about a foreign educational system
Deadline (締め切り)
Your presentation day will be on November 19th (11/19), so you have three (3) weeks to prepare them. Please be ready on the day to present.

Guidelines
1. Write a summary (要約) with your partners about the topic you want to present on. The summary will be due next week (来週).

*Go to this link for a review of what should go into a summary. The link is a post about summaries and outlines - for now, only look at the part about summaries! I hope this can help you in your summary writing.

2. With your classmates, fill in the topic preparation sheet that comes with this handout. There is a section on it to write in the summary. This is a working record of your group’s preparation about your topic.

3. Be ready for me to review your progress next week and for your group to practice your presentation in-class on November 12th (11/12). You can practice with me and/or other groups of students.

4. Finalize your presentation outside of class and be ready to present on 11/19!

Good luck! I look forward to our presentation day!

See you next time!

電気通信大学 ASE II・東京理科大学 A英1: Foreign educational systems・外国教育

Hello!

How are you? Let's keep going more with the theme of education

Look at the picture above. It's of a classroom in Tanzania, in Africa. Today
I have three short videos for you about educational systems in three different countriesFinlandIndia, and South Korea

Let's watch one of the videos in classyou can choose which oneLet's answer these first two questions after we watch:

1. Do you see anything from your own educational experiences in the video of the country's system you watched?

2. Overall, does it seem better - or worse - than your educational experience?

Here are the videos. The first one is about education in Finland

This next one below is about India.

This last one is about South Korea.

Homework
Watch the other two videos we did not see in class and make some notes about your impressions. Now answer these next two questions in your notebooks:

3. Which of the three systems is the least like your experience?

4. If you could bring together some things from these countries into a single educational system, which parts would you take from each country?

Post your impressions as comments to this blogpost. I'll be interested to read what you have to say and will value it greatly.

See you next week!

東京理科大学 情報学科技術英語: Short presentations・発表

Hello!

How are you? Today, here is our short presentation assignment.

Topic & task
Select a technical aspect about the internet or World Wide Web – for example, a technical issue about network connection in the early history of internet development, or how Tim Berners-Lee developed the technical connectivity to realize the World Wide Web.

Develop a short, 5-6 minute presentation about your topicnot a reading in front of others of a script, but a developed spoken presentation of your topic.

Guidelines
For the presentation, you have a choice of making an A3-sized poster or short Power Point display, with a summary of what your topic is.

Deadline (締め切り
We will do the presentations on November 13th (11/13), so you have three (3) weeks to research, develop summaries, practice presenting, and finally presenting these.

(I have pushed the presentations back one week to give us all more time for preparation and practice!)

Good luck! I look forward to seeing your choices of topics as well as your presentations.

See you next time!

電気通信大学 ASE II・東京理科大学 A英1: Math education in India・インドの数学教育

Hello!

How are you? The picture at the top is a hexadecimal multiplication table. It is one of many ways that multiplication (九九) is taught in schools in a number of countries.

Activity/homework

Look at the video below. It's an elementary school math teacher in India showing patterns that children follow there to learn multiplication tables. It's in Hindi (ヒンデュ語), but you can follow the patterns if you look carefully.

While as applied science and technology majors you may know and/or understand these patterns already, how would you compare the teacher's method with how you learned multiplication tables in school?

(If you have any trouble seeing this video clip, go to this link here, or look on YouTube for "How math is taught in India," or paste in this URL: https://youtu.be/EIYPGfcCab0)

What do you think of this method?

Have fun talking about this!

See you next class!
