How are you? Today I will introduce our 5th writing assignment (作文5) - evaluating the quality and characteristics of a work of art or piece of music.
While I have given all of you the handout about the assignment, I will post it here as another way to remind all of you about what you can do for this assignment.
Topic
As you have seen in class, think about evaluating the qualities and characteristics of a painting, sculpture, photograph, or musical piece along these lines:

Topic
Choose any work
of art
or piece of music from the blogpost from last class – or find a work of art or
some music on your own.
Important
note:
If you search out music on your own, any kind is acceptable – but make it an
instrumental piece of music, with no vocals, because lyrics add another dynamic
to your evaluation that may complicate it.
Wikimedia Commons is a good source to find reproductions of
works of art that are downloadable for free. Of course, YouTube is the best
place to find video files of music.
As you have seen in class, think about evaluating the qualities and characteristics of a painting, sculpture, photograph, or musical piece along these lines:

The dynamics of space,
color, shape, figures, action for an artwork or of sound for a piece of music.
·
The particular mood
or feeling the composition of the artwork
or the piece of music gives an impression of.
·
The kind of scenario
you imagine from the artwork or piece of music – is there a story that
somehow comes to your mind when viewing and remembering the artwork or
listening to the piece of music?

Bring together in the
end a two-sided argument in your
view for the strength – or weakness – of the artwork or piece of music. It is perfectly okay to criticize a work of
art or musical composition – so long
as you can show a strong sense of reasoning for why you feel the way you do
about it.
Deadline (締め切り)
The deadline will be December 22nd (12/22), so this time you only
have one (1) week to draft and write
this – but as we are coming up to the New Year’s break, we can work on this in-class this week.
Next week (12/22), we will be in the computer room of the 1st floor of the library where I can look at your rough drafts, then you can write your final drafts and print them out in the room – though you should also try to do some work with this outside of class.
Guidelines
1. Write a first draft (下書き) and a summary (要約) about what you will write on in class.
2. Fill in the topic preparation sheet that comes with this handout. There is a section on it to fill out the summary. As we have done before, this is a working record of your ideas and drafting about your topic.
3. Bring your rough drafts to the computer room on the 1st floor of the library on December 22nd. Then in the class we will have there, you can write your final drafts, and you can print out and turn in there.
