KIFL English for the Hospitality Industry 2A June 26 final presentation themes

Hello to all my EH2 students,

This is a short post - simply your final presentation themes.

They are all good ideas - but I would like to see you commit to these!

See you tomorrow!

星薬科大学薬学英語I・6月26日lesson plan & board notes ・Greek/Latin word parts with kanji connections

Hello to all my Pharm Eng I students,

I was glad to see all of you today! Here's the lesson plan for 6/26:

Here are the board notes:

Greek and Latin word parts with a kanji connection to help you remember or guess meanings of words is another way to help you gather more words for your vocabulary. Try this out next semester!

I'll be happy to see all of you and work with you in final presentation practice next week. Take a look at this video again - as many times as you like -  to refresh yourselves on how to organize your ideas when speaking in your presentations.

Take care!

KIFL Senka & English for the Hospitality Industry 2A ・ special link about final presentations

Hello to all my Senka and EH2 students,

I'm very sorry for posting so late - I've had an especially busy week. Because of the typhoon on Wednesday, I thought it was better to be flexible and ad-lib what we did. I also wasn't feeling well on Friday, so I am only now able to post.

Basically, this is short. I want to direct all of you to a link. Click here to check it out. It's from last year and has three videos on it about presenting. For all of you in the Senka classes - you've already shown me that you are great presenters, but look at these - you may get some other ideas about how to present yourself while talking, about what to use on PowerPoint slides, and so on.

For the EH2 students - you've seen this before in EH1 but take a look at it again. It's a good refresher about presenting.

Hope this helps all of you. Watch the videos on the link as many times as you like. See you in class!

I will think of some more ideas for all of you when I can. You can also write to me by posting a comment to this topic and telling me your ideas too!

Finally, take a look at this video about presentations. Watch it as many times as you like. It has a lot of good hints about preparing good presentations.

星薬科大学・another special posting for Hoshi ESS & Tuesday Pharm Eng I students

Hello to all my Tuesday Pharm Eng I students and the Hoshi ESS,

How are you? Hope you've all had a good weekend.

As you all can see, here's a video above - it's about English castles. Tomohiro Onuki is interested in buildings in England, so I thought he might find this video interesting. Tomohiro - watch it and tell me what you think. For anybody in the ESS - have any of you ever been to England? Have you ever seen a real English castle? Talk about it with each other!

Here's something for Yuki Nakajima and the Hoshi ESS: Yuki - you have said that you enjoy snowboarding and are the president of the snowboarding club, and that you would like to write more in English.

So here's something to cool you down on our warm days - for you, Yuki, and anyone else in the Hoshi ESS who loves snowboarding - here's a video of Shaun White, the great American snowboarder!

Yuki - I know you are busy but sometime, when you have a chance - write something short about what snowboarding means to you, and share with me - ask me for my email address and you can send it to me.

Here's something else for Mika Takahashi and the ESS: Mika - you've said you're in the Hoshi dance club. What do you think of this? It's a video of the Brazilian fighting dance, the capoeira:

Tell me what you think of it! For those of you in the ESS - do you dance? And do you know about capoeira? If you like dancing, this might be really interesting to you. Tell your dancing friends about it.

For Aya Oguchi and the ESS, here's something different. Look at this picture:
They're all happy! Aya - you've said that your two favorite words are "happy" and "smile." So tell me - or tell your friends - what are three (3) things that make you happy? Think, say and finish this sentence:

Three things that make me happy are ____________________, ____________________ and  ____________________.

Aya - do this and tell me next class! And for all of you in the ESS - next time you meet each other for an ESS get-together, pass this idea around and say and share your ideas about what make you happy with each other!

Finally - for Yuki Yamazaki - you have said you teach chemistry to junior high school students. So I have a question:

What's the biggest challenge to you about teaching chemistry to young students? Tell me what you  think sometime. (And by the way - what's this famous drug in the picture above?)

FOR ALL OF YOU IN MY TUESDAY CLASSES - DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE FINAL PRESENTATION GROUPS! I'LL ASK YOU ABOUT THEM NEXT CLASS!

See you next class!

KIFL Senka Global Studies & Business Communications Skills ・June 6 GS mid-term short presentations & BCS lesson plan & extra notes on presenting

Hello to all my Senka students,

Otsukaresamadeshita to you on your presentations from last week in BCS and today in GS!

Overall, I was very impressed with you especially today in GS! Your topics were interesting and challenging, and I can't wait to see what you will try out with your final presentations. I'm proud of you and happy with what you did.  Great work from all of you!

Here's the lesson plan and board notes today for the 6/6 BCS class:

My apologies for the bottom part of the photo getting cut off like this. I don't know what happened! But we will continue with this next week (6/13). The handout I gave you today about instructions - we'll do the omelette-making process as our activity in the BCS class next week.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT - BUT RELATED:
This is a reposting from my earlier post today for my Tuesday-Wednesday English for the Hospitality Industry class. They also did short mid-term presentations this week and will do final presentations at the end of the semester. Let me share with you what I said to them today.

Here are some extra comments for all of you about final presentation thinking, planning and research:

1. START PUTTING KEY WORDS AND PHRASES ON INDEX CARDS.  This will help your ability to ad-lib and be more flexible with yourself in your presentation speaking style.

2. TAKE CARE OF VOCABULARY & PRONUNCIATION - AND 3. FACT-CHECK ON ANY STATISTICAL INFORMATION (see below). While many English words are in Japanese, you have to take care to pronounce such words in a natural English pronunciation style - for example, studio instead of スタジオ.

In addition - for information on dates, names, sales figures and such (in business) - do some extra fact-checking even for things you may not say the first time in a presentation but that may come up in a Q&A session after the talk.

4. RESEARCH COMPLETELY IN THE LANGUAGE YOU WILL PRESENT IN.  I can't say enough about how important this really is. It will help you think more in the language of your presentation to research in it, and help you get smoother with it.

Take a look at these anytime you like. Once again - good job - and see you next week!

KIFL English for the Hospitality Industry 2A June 5-6 mid-term short presentations, general comments & board notes on presenting

Hello to all EH2 students,

Thank you for your hard work yesterday and today in class on your mid-term short presentations. You tried hard on them and prepared well. You did a good job overall and all of you are getting better and better, step-by-step, on your presenting skills.

Here are a few more general comments on your presentations:

Michelle - you're getting better and better, more and more natural at this. I think you're getting better at organizing your visual information as well. Check a few more facts  - but good work!

Ryoichi - Same here. You need to do more fact-checking but you are getting better at this too. You can be really natural with people in public - they will like you!

Tomoyo - You really do your homework well. Good research here. You're getting more confident in front of people as well, and I think with time you'll be really good at this. Good job.

Chichan - I think you can do this - but you need to tell yourself you can do it. I thought you got bettter and better as your talk went on today. I was very impressed. Choosing Osaka was very natural for you and you can be a really good guide for your city with time and more practice. Good job too!

Here are the board notes I showed you today in class after your talks. Look at these - they will also be really important for you with the final presentation handouts I gave you on Tuesday.

This was the first point. REALLY important!

This last point I wrote after you left the classroom. Also REALLY important!

But overall - GREAT JOB! I'll see you in class next week!

聖学院大学児童英語コミュニケーション・6月7日・ホリデイ・イベントのレッスン

Hello to all my Jido Eigo students,

Thank you for all your hard work in this class!

I will show you some pictures. Look at all of them. Do you know what holidays or events they are? Tell a classmate what you think the names of these are in English.

This the first one. Try this with your classmates:

I think this event is called _________________________ . (What do you think?)

Do you know it? I think you can. Now try with these pictures:

Tell me what you think they are in class. Check all of them with a partner or group, and write them down in English!

See you in class!

星薬科大学・special message for Tuesday students about final presentations & Hoshi ESS post

Hello all Pharm Eng I students & ESS members,

Here's a special posting for all of you. It's a little late, but I have been busy - and I have a slow computer! I'm very sorry about that. I hate my computer right now!

A TUESDAY PHARM ENG I MESSAGE:
Don't forget about your final presentations! Next Tuesday (June 5th), I'll be asking all of you about who you would like to be with in your groups for your final presentation projects. Think about your themes as well - what topics would you present about? Let me know next class.

NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT:
This is for Yuna Shimakawa and the ESS. Yuna - you have said you love grandmothers. Here's a very simple but interesting video about a grandmother's smile. For all of you in the ESS with a grandmother - this one's for all of you too!

Yuna - and anyone else - here's a little piece of homework for you: watch it and tell me what you think of it. Post a comment to this blog or tell me in class.

For Masashi Uchida and the ESS - do you like basketball? I know you do Masashi - so here's a video for  you and anyone else in the ESS who likes basketball, especially the NBA in the U.S.! Here's a video about the history of one of the greatest NBA teams, the Los Angeles Lakers. Masashi - watch it and tell me what you think. Post of comment to the blog or tell me in class!

How hungry are all of you? Here's a recipe I hope all of you would like - I know I like it! Wakana Matsumoto said she liked shoronpo when she went to Taiwan. How about all of you in the ESS? Wakana - I couldn't find a shoronpo recipe, but I found this. If you like to cook, maybe you can try it. Take a look at it - and post a comment to the blog or tell me what you think in class. Hope you and other Chinese food lovers like it!

SPECIAL NOTE:
Anyone in the ESS can post to this blog - you don't have to be in my class! I would be very happy to hear from you! But for all of you in my Tuesday classes - see you next week!
