東京理科大学 A英1: Parapsychology・超心理学

Hello!

How are you? Here is a post for our new topic on sports psychology.

Do you know what these cards are at the top? They are called Zener cards, and they were first used for experiments in parapsychology (超心理学) in the U.S. in the 1930s.

A researcher in parapsychology named Joseph Banks Rhine made this experiment famous. He worked with an assistant named Karl Zener, who designed the cards. They wanted to prove the existence of ESP (extrasensory perception).

Experiments such as these have sometimes been used in sports psychology as ways to help athletes, such as baseball or soccer players, get over any difficulties they may have with their play or physical conditioning.

The experiments with these cards, however, were found over the years to have problems, and very few people in psychology now take this experiment seriously.

As future applied scientists, you should know that this is of course not scientifically valid. I do not put this here to make it look valid, or to make you believe in this. But it may be interesting to see how it works, and to play this as a game. Let's check it out!

Activity

Watch this video, but do not make any notes! You will need pencil and paper, however, to record your scores!

You can test you on how much you remember the order of the Zener cards with this video. You can even test a partner in the same way.

For the first 1:10 of the video a person introduces what Zener cards are. You can skip this part and go directly to the cards! From that point, there's no talk on the video. It's silent, so it should be no problem to follow it. Let's get started!

How well did you do?

See you next time!

電気通信大学 AE2Y II: Topic 3 assignment support - peer marking abstracts

Hello!

How are you? Today this is a little unusual post - about peer marking of your classmates' abstracts.

Peer marking of abstracts

On this post, you will see a list of questions that you will ask yourselves about a classmate's abstract. You will mark the classmate's abstract using this list, then scoring it on a scale that will be shown under each question. When you are finished, you will add up the score and give it to your classmate, along with his or her abstract.

Then, the classmate will revise (make changes) to the abstract as may be needed.

While you are doing this, your classmate will do the same with your abstract - marking and scoring it,  then handing it back to you to revise as may be needed. So let's start!

Marking points - On a separate piece of paper, make a numbered list, with spaces to write in comments, like this:

Move 1:         1     2     3     4     5

Comment:

Move 2:         1     2     3     4     5

Comment:

Move 3:         1     2     3     4     5

Comment:

Move 4:         1     2     3     4     5

Comment:

Move 5:         1     2     3     4     5

Comment:

So as you can see, the maximum score you can give a person would be 25 points in total.

Now here are the points you will look for in the person's abstract first draft! Let's go!

Move 1 - introduction/background of research/situation
Do the first 2-3 sentences clearly show an introduction, or some larger background, or a situation about the topic or issue that has been reported about in the news, or that there is some research or are some studies about?

Scale - which mark should the person's Move 1 get? If you score from 1-3, the person should revise or improve the Move 1. In addition - please write a short comment or reaction to this point.

1.     I completely disagree with this question
2.     I partially disagree
3.     I disagree
4.     I partially agree
5.     I completely agree

Move 2 - present research/issue/purpose

Do the next 2-3 sentences clearly show some present research about the topic or issue, the topic or issue in its importance, or purpose for why we need to understand the topic or issue and what impact it has on society?

Scale - which mark should the person's Move 2 get? If you score from 1-3, the person should revise or improve the Move 2. In addition - please write a short comment or reaction to this point.

1.     I completely disagree with this question
2.     I partially disagree
3.     I disagree
4.     I partially agree
5.     I completely agree

Move 3 - methods/materials/subjects/proceedings

Do the next sentences clearly show, or indicate, some study or research that has been done, or a timely report or news investigation, or series of reports or investigations? Moreover, when were any of these done, reported, or investigated? (If it shows some study or research, how was it carried out? What was done?)

Scale - which mark should the person's Move 3 get? If you score from 1-3, the person should revise or improve the Move 3. In addition - please write a short comment or reaction to this point.

1.     I completely disagree with this question
2.     I partially disagree
3.     I disagree
4.     I partially agree
5.     I completely agree

Move 4 - results/findings

Does the Move 4 clearly show some results or findings of research, or reports or investigations? What could the person say was a result of the topic or issue right now?

Scale - which mark should the person's Move 4 get? If you score from 1-3, the person should revise or improve the Move 4. In addition - please write a short comment or reaction to this point.

1.     I completely disagree with this question
2.     I partially disagree
3.     I disagree
4.     I partially agree
5.     I completely agree

Move 5 - discussion/conclusion/implications/recommendations

Does the end of the abstract clearly discuss some implications of the topic or issue as a conclusion, and show some recommendations for further study or concern?

Scale - which mark should the person's Move 5 get? If you score from 1-3, the person should revise or improve the Move 5. In addition - please write a short comment or reaction to this point.

1.     I completely disagree with this question
2.     I partially disagree
3.     I disagree
4.     I partially agree
5.     I completely agree

Finally - is the abstract written in paragraph form? And - is it between 200-250 words? (Do a word count!)

After marking

Now here are some final important points - you have to be completely honest with each other in order for this to work! If you see that the person's abstract needs improvement in some way, mark it so and comment on it. You are not attacking a classmate's work! You are helping the person. Likewise, that person is helping you.

You have time in class today to improve what you need!

I hope all this will help you. Take care!

東京理科大学 A英3: Writing assignment 5・作文5

Hello!

How are you? Today I will show you the 5th writing assignment (作文5) - writing about your future working life and lifestyle.

Topic
Write about what you would like for your ideal future working life and lifestyle.

Think about the kind of working situations you would like to have. Would it be working in a company or start-up? Or would you maybe prefer to work more independently – for example, in a company that would allow you to work on your own, perhaps in your own small office - perhaps even in a situation where you make your own working hours and so long as you meet deadlines, you could even work anytime you wanted?

Would you like to even have a different kind of schedule – for example, working at night or even on weekends, and sleeping and resting during the daytime? Would you prefer working freelance, or even starting your own business, either with another person in your field – or on your own? Would you like to work from an office - or from home?

I would like you to cover these points in your writing:
  • the kind of working situation and schedule you would like (research for a company or start-up, or perhaps as part of a university, or even through your own business, plus the kinds of hours and place you want to do your work in)
  • the kind of place you would like to live in (such as in Tokyo or another major city, or perhaps in a small city or even a town somewhere in Japan, or another country)
  • the kind of life you envision for yourself (married, staying single, living in a large house or mansion, or some other kind of living arrangement)
While this assignment deals with only one topic, you have a lot of freedom to write about the kind of working life and lifestyle you wish for in your future.

How much to write
I would like you to write as much as you can, around 3-5 paragraphs' worth of writing - though the more, the better!

Deadline (締め切り)
It will be November 19th (11/19), so I want you to work on your first draft (下書き) starting today in your notebooks in pencil outside of class. Next class, I will try to show you how you can review your drafts, and you can change things about the draft as you need to, then write to the finish, print the final version out (if you type it up), and turn in your work.

Good luck with this! I hope you can have fun with this, and enjoy writing about your ideal working life and lifestyle.

I look forward to reading your great writing on this topic!

東京理科大学 A英3: Future places, homes & lifestyles・将来、未来の場所、家、ライフスタイル

Hello!

How are you? Today, let's look at your future life in different kinds of places, homes, and lifestyles.

Look at the colorful apartment building above. Could you see yourself living in it in the future? Maybe it's not your style, but maybe some other people might like it!

Activity

Look at these different kinds of places and homes. Which do you like? Which do you see yourself wanting to live in? Which one is better than another one? Which kind of place or home fits your personality the best?

Talk about these with your classmates and write some notes about what you like, and which you think is better. Then - think about what kind of home and place in the future you could see yourself living in.

Living in Tokyo

Living in a small town

Living in a danchi

Living in a mansion

Now how about your lifestyle? Which do you think you would want to do? Do you see yourself…

…getting married and having a family?

Or being happy to stay single?

Have fun with these!

電気通信大学 AE2Y II: Topic 3 writing & presentation assignment

Hello!

How are you? Today, here is our 3rd writing & presentation assignment.

While I have already given you the handout about this assignment, I am posting it here as well as another way to help remind you on what you can do.

Topic & task
The picture above is a scan of the original ARPANET packet switching network layout, which was the basis for what later became the internet. This illustrates, in part, what we will focus on in this assignment.

Select an issue about the governance of the internet or World Wide Web – for example, a general issue about the pros and cons of regulating the internet, or pros and cons about how Tim Berners-Lee thought of the WWW – or a specific issue about the internet or WWW – for example, how to regulate fake news and the spread of misinformation, or whether or not governments should have net neutrality.

Abstract writing

About your topic, write a short abstract of between 200-250 words about your opinions, suggestions, and methodology on what you believe should and can be done about the internet or WWW.

Because this is a new kind of writing for all of you, we will aim for a one-sided argument from our reactions to the issues you will write about this time. So you can state an opinion – but you have to go beyond only saying what you believe, to develop as much of a methodology as you can to support the position you take.

For example, if you believe the internet does not need to be regulated by local or national governments, state your opinion about it – but do not stop there. Exactly why, in your view, does it not need to be regulated? Are things about the web fine the way they are? Or is self-regulation by the general public, where people simply make promises not to post fake news or spread misinformation, good enough to keep the internet a safe area?

Short presentation
Along with your written abstract, develop a short, five (5) -minute presentation based on your abstract about the same topic – not a reading in front of others of your paper, but a separate, developed presentation of your topic.

Guidelines
I would like you to type up your abstract. For the presentation, you have a choice of making an A3-sized poster or short Power Point display, as we have done before. We will also use the same guidelines as we have done before.

Deadline (締め切り)
We will turn in the abstracts and do the presentations on November 20th (11/20), so you have two (2) weeks to do these.

Good luck! I look forward to reading about, and seeing, your reactions and arguments to your choices of topics.
