東京理科大学 A英3: Mid-term (spring final) writing assignment Word formatting・中間作文のワードフォーマット

Hello!

As promised, here is the Word formatting for the mid-term (spring final) writing assignment.

I have set it in an extra-large image size so you can see how the formatting looks - so my apologies if you have trouble seeing this on your Smartphones. It may be better to view this on a computer.

Feel free to print this out. It comes from an actual student composition from last year. The topic is different from what you are writing about, but the formatting is the same.

Please remember that any font is okay - so long as you set your typing to 12-point size. This is important as it is still small enough to fit on a page while still being at a readable size.

I recommend serifed fonts like Times New Roman, or the font I use on this blog - Georgia. Fonts like these, especially Times New Roman, are easily readable and save space.

Good luck, and I'll see you next week in our last meeting.

See you then!

東京理科大学 A英3 Spring mid-term writing assignment supporting post on art・前学期 「中間」作文美術比較対照の付記

Hello!

How are you? Here is a supporting post for those of you who are interested in writing a comparison-contrast with works of art.

Task
Here are four (4) examples of works of art. Choose two (2) of them and write a comparison and contrast about them. Include these points:

Dynamics of artistic composition (美学、美術の構成) - (for example, color, space, relationships of people and/or objects to each other)

Possible story or scenario that the work of art shows or gives ideas about (for example, mood, feelings of people, conditions of objects, or the place where the people and/or objects are)

Finally, choose the work of art you prefer (好む) and show what you believe to be a short story or scenario that comes to your mind when you see or think about this artwork.

Okay! Let's begin!

Edgar Degas, Dancers

Kitagawa Utamaro, Three Beauties of the Present Day

Masanobu Okamura, Shibai Ukie

Edvard Munch, The Dance of Life

See you next time!

東京理科大学 A英3: Spring mid-term writing assignment・前学期「中間」作文

Hello!

How are you? Here is our mid-term (spring final) writing assignment (中間「前学期」作文). While I have given you all the handout about it, I am posting it here as well as another way to help remind all of you about what you can write for it.

Topic choices

You have a choice between two (2) different topic areas:

・Comparing and contrasting (比較対照している) two different works of art

・Writing about a problem or controversy in an area of science or technology

About the first choice:

For this topic, I will show on the Daily Sekaijin four (4) different works of art. You can choose two (2) of them and compare and contrast them. Look for these points in your comparison and contrast:

Dynamics of artistic composition (美学、美術の構成) - (for example, color, space, relationships

of people and/or objects to each other)

Possible story or scenario that the work of art shows or gives ideas about (for example,

mood, feelings of people, conditions of objects or the place where the people and/or objects
are)

Finally, choose the work of art you prefer (好む) and show what you believe to be a short story
or scenario that comes to your mind when you see or think about this artwork.

About the second choice:

For this topic, think about a problem or controversy (問題、議論) in any area of science or technology – for example, a problem with a drug or medication in research, or a technological application. Here are some examples of such problems:

The false data in the research of Haruko Obokata and the trouble that her research

institute got into because of it

The use – and misuse – of private data by social media companies such as Facebook

The ways in which social media has spread fake news and other false information

You are not limited to these problems and issues, but these are some good examples.

Special note:
For both of these different choices, I will gather your writing on this topic into a collection called The Little Book of Big Things -  a book about student writers’ feelings, opinions, issues and perceptions (認識) about different topics.

How much to write
I would like you to write 4-5 paragraphs – but if you can go longer that would be great! I would like you to write as much as you can, because your work may be published (出版した) on this blog and in The Little Book of Big Things collection.

Deadline (締め切り)
It will be on July 30th (7/30), and it will be a final version (完成版). You should begin writing now – do not wait until the day or night before!

Good luck! I will look forward to reading your great writing – and please relax over the summer for a job well done!

東京理科大学 A英3: Mid-term (spring final) writing assignment・中間「前学期」作文

Hello!

How are you? Here is our mid-term (spring final) writing assignment (中間「前学期」作文) - comparing and contrasting (比較対照している) different people or places.

While I have already given you the handout for this assignment, I am posting it here as another way to help you know what you can do.

Topic choices
You have two (2) choices for topics. Choose one (1) of them.

1. Compare (比べる) two (2) different people to each other.

In this topic, compare two different people – it could be the personalities of some people you know, such as a brother to a sister, or our mother and your father.

It could also be about two different people you know outside your family who may have the same jobs, or have had the same impact on your lives, like two teachers who had an impact on you, or two friends, coaches, or other people who have been big in your lives. But it could also be two famous people you think are unique, interesting, or special, like two singers, musicians, actors, athletes, writers, artists, or scientists. But remember – how similar are they? How different are they?

I will gather your writing on this topic into The Small Book of Big People book I have talked about before in class.

2. Compare two (2) places to each other.

In this topic, compare two different places that you know about, and may mean a lot to you – two different schools, or other kinds of places from your childhood. It could also be about two different cities or towns – maybe places you know, but also places you have never been to but would like to go to, maybe even live in someday.

I am gathering writing on this topic into the Places & Traces book I have also talked about in class.

For this topic, you can use the pictures from my blog that I posted about places and homes, or you can find your own pictures.

How much to write
I would like you to write at least four (4) paragraphs – but if you can go longer that would be great! I would like you to write as much as you can, because your work may be published (出版した) on both this blog and in The Small Book of Big People and Places & Traces books.

Deadline (締め切り)
It will be next week (来週) on July 31st (7/31), and it will be a final version (完成版). This means you must begin writing now – do not wait until the day or night before!

To help you, I will give you a draft sheet (下書きシート) that you can write ideas, notes, topic sentences, and supporting sentences on. You will then write your final version on a separate sheet of notebook paper. On 7/31, you will hand in both the draft sheet and the final version.

Good luck! I will look forward to reading your great writing – and please relax over the summer for a job well done!
