Hello!
How are you? Today let's look some more at ukiyoe, and let's focus on one ukiyoe artist - perhaps the greatest of all artists of this genre - Katsushika Hokusai.
Activity
This is an activity that goes with our textbook part on Hokusai. After you read and listen, you can discuss what you have read and listened to with some examples of Hokusai's greatest works - his woodblock print series of various depictions of Mt. Fuji, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. The picture at the top is a famous print from this series, South Wind, Clear Sky.
What do you see in these pictures? What is the relationship between people and nature? What role or status does Mt. Fuji play in these pictures? Which one of these pictures do you like the most?

I would love to show you every one of these - but that would make for too big a post! So here are some examples of prints from this series. Let's start with what is probably the single most famous print from this series - Under the Wave off Kanagawa, sometimes known as The Great Wave off Kanagawa:
Under the Wave off Kanagawa (Great Wave off Kanagawa)
Lightning Below the Summit
Cushion Pine at Aoyama
Ejiri in the Suruga Province
The Kazusa Province Sea Route
The Tea Plantation of Katakura in the Suruga Province
Once again - there are so many more pictures to show you, but time and space make it too difficult! I hope you enjoy these and hope they can help you with your understanding of Hokusai and ukiyoe.
See you next time!
