Hello!
How are you? Here's a supporting post for our final assignments in both the listening & speaking, and writing & composition classes!
Let's look at ukiyoe, and let's focus on one ukiyoe artist - perhaps the greatest of all artists of this genre - Katsushika Hokusai.

This is an activity that goes with the listening & speaking textbook unit on ukiyoe. Look at these examples of Hokusai's greatest works - his woodblock print series of various depictions of Mt. Fuji, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.
The picture above is his most famous print from this series - Under the Wave off Kanagawa, sometimes known as The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
Activity/homework
Look at these pictures. What do you see in them? What is the relationship between people and nature? What role or status does Mt. Fuji play in these pictures? Which one of these pictures do you like the most?

I would love to show you every one of these - but that would make for too big a post! So here are some examples of prints from this series. Let's start with what is another famous print from this series:
South Wind, Clear Sky
Lightning Below the Summit
Cushion Pine at Aoyama
Ejiri in the Suruga Province
The Kazusa Province Sea Route
The Tea Plantation of Katakura in the Suruga Province
When you are finished, talk and write about your favorite print. Talk and write about the points I showed above - the relationship between people and nature, the role of Mt. Fuji, and so on - and what your reaction and feeling is with your favorite print.
What do you like about it? The colors? The design? The symbolism? Talk and write freely about what you like and feel about it.
Once again - there are so many more pictures to show you, but time and space make it too difficult! I hope you enjoy these and hope they can help you with your understanding of Hokusai and ukiyoe.
