電気通信大学 AE2Y II: Final notes for final project・期末プロジェクトの最後のノート

Hello!

How are you? As I mentioned today, here is a short post with some reminders about what you need to bring with you next week (1/29) for the hand-in of your final writing project composition and the final presentations

Reminders

First, please bring:

  • Your final draft of the final writing assignment composition (作文
  • Your completed presentation display with a slideshow handout of your display (not print-outs of all your slides!), and a final draft of your presentation outline
  • Your own computer or tablet with the battery charged to 100% (or close to it)
If you need another refresher on outlining, click on this link here.

Next:

Make sure that both your writing composition and your presentation display has numbered citations (引用within both the composition and display in IEEE style.

Make sure you also have a reference list in IEEE style at the end on a separate page of your composition and a reference list on the last slide of your display.

To refresh yourself on IEEE style, see my slideshow link from last week's (1/15) class here

Finally:

As I mentioned in class, I have to give one tough rule for the day on the final presentations. This is so everyone gets an equal chance to do their presentations, and that the day goes smoothly for everyone.

This is the rule - please come on time for the time schedule you chose! If you are more than 5 minutes late, I cannot let you give your presentation.

Our schedule is - schedule 1 (13:00-13:40) & schedule 2 (13:45-14:25)

I am not allowed to post your names on here as this will violate the UEC privacy policy - so please remember your group members and time!

Good luck for the presentations - and see you next week!

See you then!

So good luck on your review! As I also mentioned in class, I recommend that you get together with the partner you selected and review with him or her this week outside of class. That way, you can help prep each other for the test.

See you at your time with your partner next week!

東京理科大学 A英1: Final review game board exam instructions review・期末テスト「ボードゲーム」の説明レビュー

Happy New Year!

How are you? I hope you had a great New Year's break

Today I will post here a review of the instructions (説明) about our final review exam. As I've said in class, it will be in the form of a board game. We will play this on our final class meeting on January 28th (1/28).

It's the same board game you played in the review exam in July - but now with some different questions from the textbook!

I hope once again that this is an interesting way to take a test for all of you!

Instructions
First - like before, this is what the board will look like. It will be on A3-sized paper:

You will notice 14 playing squares - seven (7) black squares, and seven (7) white squares, with the start square and the goal in grayThis board will be for the two (2) game pieces that two (2) players will play on

The 14 squares will be for the questions that both players will ask each other. The arrows show the directions the players will move their game pieces around on when they answer the questions correctly.

Now let's review the steps in the board game!

Here is what the score sheet looks like (It's small on the scan shot, but you'll see it more clearly on paper next week!)

As before, you will see that there are spaces for three (3) "makeup" (補講) questions

As you play with your partner, if your partner's score is not so high after the seven (7) questions, you will see four (4) extra questions. You can choose up to three (3) of these "makeup" questions to ask your partner

Special note: Only do these extra three (3) questions if your partner hasn't been doing well. If your partner has been scoring well - you don't need to ask these questions!

This can give your partner some more chances to raise up a higher score on the test.

I hope this is okay for all of you! Take a look at these steps - look at them as many times as you want or need. We'll play this next week (1/28) in our last class for the review exam!

So good luck! See you next week!

Hello!

How are you? Today here is a short post of some more supporting links for all of you that may be to your interest for your final presentation assignment. They connect in some ways to my topic suggestions that I posted last week about the final presentations.

電気通信大学 AE2Y II: About citation・引用について

Hello!

How are you? This is a short post with a link where you can access today's slide show about citation (引用) in academic writing and presentation

The picture at the top is a screenshot of a Word document reference list page. It is the Word version of the same reference list I showed at the end of my slide show today.

While the rules for citation that I showed you may seem complex, they are important to follow in showing the sources of information and content that support your writing and presentation topics.

I will require that you show where you get the information that supports the content within your topic for your final writing and presentation assignment, and that you follow these rules exactly in your citation and reference lists in both your written paper and your presentation.

So to see today's slide show, click on this link

You may find that it is easier to see this on a computer or tablet rather than a smartphone. If you cannot access the link on a smartphone, please go to a computer or tablet to access it. It is important!

Watch the slide show where you can access it. Watch it as many times as you need

See you next week!

電気通信大学 ASE II: Fall semester final presentations ・後期末プレゼンテーション

Hello!

Our fall final presentation topic will be your choice! Like all our presentation topics this semester, these will also be individual projects.

NEW - semester topic review
Here is a review of the topics of this semester:

  • Comparison & contrasting educational systems in different countries
  • Japan and the future
Deadline (締め切り)
We will do these on January 29th (1/29), so you have the next four (4) weeks to prepare these. That will seem like a long time, but we will go through topic selection and review, plus presentation practice that I will coach you on.

This process is very important, because as always, I would like to see you make the best presentations you can, so I would like to continue to guide and coach you so that you can make the best presentations you can to this point - that is why we will take time to prepare and practice!

Here is our remaining schedule, and what we will do in it:

1/8 - introduction of final presentation project & open class time for idea/topic generation

1/15 - topic summary review & open class for preparation
1/22 - final presentation practice
1/29 - final presentations

Guidelines
You can choose one (1) of these topicsbut with these guidelines:

1. Comparing & contrasting the quality of science education in different countries
You can focus on the quality of science education in different countries, in any area of science, with Japan as one of the countries you can focus on.

Like our two presentations we have done this semester, you must present a two-sided argument about the merits or demerits of the area of science you focus on.

Special note: If you have focused on science in your presentation on educational systems before, you must present on something different than what you did before, such as a different country for comparison or a different area of science – do not present the same thing about the same country(s) that you already did!

2. The merits and demerits of the social impact, in the past or present, of key inventions or discoveries in science & technology
You must present on something different than what you did before – do not present the same thing on the same topic that you did also!

In this topic, you can take a historical view - focus on an invention or discovery in science or technology in any area of science you are interested in (chemistry, physics, math, or an applied science like engineering or technology like IT). What has been – or is becoming –  the social impact of the invention or discovery?

Like our two presentations we have done this semester, you must present a two-sided argument about the topic, and what you would do.

Special note: Once again, you must present on something different than what you did before – do not present the same thing about the same invention or discovery that you already did!

3. A topic of your choice

For this, see me on what you have in mind for a topic. It should be science or technology-oriented, and something that you have not done before.

Like with the other topic suggestions, you should work towards a two-sided argument within your topic choice.

NEW - supporting links
1. Here are some video links to things that relate to the first two theme ideas above. Each one will take you directly to the TED website. With each one you can download the written transcript of the talk in either English or Japanese. (Note - the first link is a longer video than the second.)

The Japanese subtitling on the videos that have them may still not be exact for the topic, but it generally is better than on most YouTube videos. In the same way, the Japanese transcripts may not be exact, but generally give you good guides that you can follow for a topic if you need them.
  • Cesar Harada - How I teach my kids to love science (2015.10) - click on this link for this talk.
  • Margaret Gould Stewart – How the hyperlink changed everything (2018.03) - click on this link for this talk.
2. Here is a link about outlining that I made for my AE2Y II class, but should be useful for all of you as well. Go to this link to see it.

I hope these links can help get you going on ideas.

Good luck! See you next time!
