東京理科大学 A英1: Mid-term test ・中間テスト(スピーキング)

Hello!

How are you? The shot above is the list of teams and members for our mid-term (spring final) test for 7/31. Please take a look at it to refresh yourselves on when you will come in and who your teammates are.

I recommend that you review with your teammates, and if you can - get together with a team another color and practice asking and answering the questions.

Good luck with this - and I'll look forward to seeing all of you next week.

See you then!

東京理科大学 A英3: Mid-term (spring final) writing assignment・中間「前学期」作文

Hello!

How are you? Here is our mid-term (spring final) writing assignment (中間「前学期」作文) - comparing and contrasting (比較対照しているdifferent people or places.

While I have already given you the handout for this assignment, I am posting it here as another way to help you know what you can do.

Topic choices
You have two (2) choices for topics. Choose one (1) of them.

1. Compare (比べる) two (2) different people to each other.

In this topic, compare two different people – it could be the personalities of some people you know, such as a brother to a sister, or our mother and your father.

It could also be about two different people you know outside your family who may have the same jobs, or have had the same impact on your lives, like two teachers who had an impact on you, or two friends, coaches, or other people who have been big in your lives. But it could also be two famous people you think are unique, interesting, or special, like two singers, musicians, actors, athletes, writers, artists, or scientists. But remember – how similar are they? How different are they?

I will gather your writing on this topic into The Small Book of Big People book I have talked about before in class.

2. Compare two (2) places to each other.

In this topic, compare two different places that you know about, and may mean a lot to you – two different schools, or other kinds of places from your childhood. It could also be about two different cities or towns – maybe places you know, but also places you have never been to but would like to go to, maybe even live in someday.

I am gathering writing on this topic into the Places & Traces book I have also talked about in class.

For this topic, you can use the pictures from my blog that I posted about places and homes, or you can find your own pictures.

How much to write
I would like you to write at least four (4) paragraphs but if you can go longer that would be great! I would like you to write as much as you can, because your work may be published (出版した) on both this blog and in The Small Book of Big People and Places & Traces books.

Deadline (締め切り)
It will be next week (来週) on July 31st (7/31), and it will be a final version (完成版). This means you must begin writing now – do not wait until the day or night before!

To help you, I will give you a draft sheet (下書きシート) that you can write ideas, notes, topic sentences, and supporting sentences on. You will then write your final version on a separate sheet of notebook paper. On 7/31, you will hand in both the draft sheet and the final version.

Good luck! I will look forward to reading your great writing – and please relax over the summer for a job well done!

電気通信大学 AWE I: Spring semester final writing assignment・前期末作文

Hello!

How are you? Today I will post about our spring final writing assignment.

The assignment will be your choice! I have given you the handout about the assignment, but I am posting it here again to help remind you about what you have to do.

Semester topic review
Here is a review of the topics of this semester:
  •        Unique, interesting, or special people
  •        Refugees
Plus our current topic:
  •       Immigration
Deadline (締め切り)
You will hand these in on July 28th (7/28), so you have two (2) weeks to draft these. I would like to see a summary of your topic, plus a first draft next week (7/21).

Guidelines
You are free to choose any one (1) of these topics, but with these guidelines:

1. Unique, interesting, or special people
You must write on a different person than what you did before – do not write the same thing on the same topic that you did already! But you can write on someone from any field – not only science.

Like our two assignments we have done this semester, you must write a one-sided argument about the person and the impact or influence about the achievements, fame, success, or notoriety the person has had.

2. Refugees
To write about a different point to this topic, two (2) suggestions I have for you are these (choose one):
  • An argument about the effectiveness of relief agencies that work with refugees
  • Difficulties that certain countries have had in absorbing and settling refugees (choose one (1) country for this)
You must write a one-sided argument for – or against – the points of the topic you choose.

3. Immigration
This is our current topic. You must write on the merits – or demerits – of immigration to Japan. What are the benefits to Japan of mass immigration? What are the demerits? Who should be let in – and perhaps, who should not? You must write a one-sided argument about the topic.

How much to write
Try to write as much as you can. I suggest you aim for at least three (3) paragraphs, but I encourage you to go longer 4-5 paragraphs at least.

I will collect your writing into the books I have talked about in class – The Small Book of Big People, Places & Traces, and Leaving Home, Going Home

Good luck! I will look forward to reading your great writing – and please relax over the summer for a job well done!

電気通信大学 ASE I: Spring semester final presentation topics・前期末プレゼンテーション

Hello!

Our spring final presentation topic will be your choice! Like the second presentation topics, these will also be individual projects, but on a special time schedule on the presentation day.

Semester topic review
Here is a review of the topics of this semester:
  •       Unique, interesting, or special people
  •     Ideal life, work, and/or school schedules & issues
Plus our current topic:
  •        Immigration
Deadline (締め切り)
We will do these on July 25th (7/25), so you have two (2) weeks to prepare these.

Guidelines
You are free to choose any one (1) of these topics, but with these guidelines:

1. Unique, interesting, or special people
You must present on a different person than what you did before – do not present the same thing on the same topic that you did already! But you can present on someone from any field – not only science.

Like our two presentations we have done this semester, you must present a one-sided argument about the person and the impact or influence about the achievements, fame, success, or notoriety the person has had.

2. Ideal life, work, and/or school schedules & issues
You must present on something different than what you did before – do not present the same thing on the same topic that you did also!

So one thing I would encourage you to do would be this: University services and the campus, and things you would change or improve about it. What would you change about the UEC campus and services on it, if you could? How about things such as food services, or counseling for academic issues?

Like our two presentations we have done this semester, you must present a one-sided argument about the topic, and what you would do.

3. Immigration
This is our current topic. You must present on the merits – or demerits – of immigration to Japan. What are the benefits to Japan of mass immigration? What are the demerits? Who should be let in – and perhaps, who should not? You must present a one-sided argument about the topic.

Good luck! See you next time - and look forward to a great and relaxing summer for a job well done!
